[MEMORY # 13]

* Jon's silver chain; talking about China. (trivial positive)

"I could help you carry the baskets," said Timi, "if only you'd let me go down to the village." She had almost lost her stammer, and had grown two inches, but was still a very small Griffin. Jonathan shook his head.

"The village women would talk and old Carving Knife would hear about you. You stay here."

He carried the Queen's apple pie up to the Old Palace on Christmas Eve and came back with a bright silver chain around his neck. Timi had lighted the candles and was watching for him.

"Fine doings!" said Jonathan. "There was music at the Palace and the lords and ladies were dancing. The Queen sent for me and gave me this chain with her own hands. The Head Cook had a medal and it seems he would have preferred a chain, for he turned first purple with anger and then green with envy, and he would cetainly have torn his hair if he had any hair to tear. As it was, he could only bite his nails and threaten, in a whisper, to make me into a pie if he ever laid hands on me. Oh, dear!" Jonathan sighed. "He had designed a cage of spun sugar with a marzipan parrot inside it. But his mince pies might have been made by the blacksmith."

He sat down and Timi began to pull off his boots.

"There's more news too. Listen to this, Timi. The Emperor of China has sent the Queen a porcelain bowl and a dragon of carved white jade. And the Emperor himself will come on a State visit, in the spring!"

"Are there dragons in China?" asked Timi.

"I don't know--China is a long way off," said Jon Dumpling. "And three months ago I should have sworn there were no Griffins here--not even little ones. But," -- he prodded her gently with his foot -- "here you are."

"Yes," said Timi. "Here I am! And in the spring the other Griffins will come back and B-Black G-Grandfather will be angry with me b-because I c-c-can't fly."

"The spring's a long way off too," said Jon.

+ Pretty decent memory! Talking about information that she's mostly already aware of through previous memories, actually. But there is never any harm in more memories of chilling out with Jon.
+ A lot of sick unhappiness around the 'yeah I still can't fly' part, though.
